Star Coaster - Free Crochet Pattern
Introducing the Star Coaster Crochet Pattern
If you’re on the hunt for a quick, easy, and thoughtful handmade gift, look no further than the Star Coaster! This free crochet pattern is perfect for last-minute presents, birthday gifts, or even a charming addition to your home decor. These coasters work up quickly, making them an ideal project for both beginners and experienced crocheters alike.
The idea for this design came during my “crochet star phase” — I just can’t get enough of these delightful shapes! After creating the base star pattern, I couldn’t resist experimenting with different ways to use it, and the Star Coaster was born.
For my coasters, I used two strands of DK weight yarn held together, which makes them sturdy and thick enough to protect your surfaces from heat. However, this pattern is incredibly versatile, so you can customize it with any yarn weight you prefer. Whether you opt for bold colors, soft pastels, or neutral tones, these coasters are sure to add a touch of handmade charm to any table setting.
Grab your hook, pick your favorite yarn, and let’s get started!

DIFFICULTY
This pattern is an Advanced Beginner level crochet pattern.
You will need to understand basic stitch anatomy for this pattern and have some basic understanding of how to make granny squares.
YARN
Please note that the choice of yarn will affect the size of the final product.
It is recommended, but not necessary, to use a weight 4 yarn (aka Worsted/Aran weight) for this pattern.
The final product shown in the photos was made using two strands of weight 2 fine yarn held together to create the thickness of a weight 4 yarn.
Keep this in mind when choosing your yarn:
Thinner yarn = smaller final product (and therefore you may need to make more rows).
Thicker yarn = larger final product.
EQUIPMENT
You will need a 5mm crochet hook (or hook to match your yarn choice).
The only additional equipment you’ll need is a pair of scissors, a tape measure/ruler and a knitter’s/tapestry needle for sewing in ends.

PATTERN NOTES
There is no wrong or right side to this pattern.
Number of stitches is counted in the ‘[ ]’ brackets.
Instructions in between the ‘* *’ symbols are to be repeated. Instructions in between ‘( )’ are stitches grouped in the same space/stitch.
If the pattern has a number before the stitch (e.g. 2DC) then you would put that number of stitches into the same stitch (e.g. 2 double crochets in the same stitch), if the number is after the stitch (e.g. DC 2) then you would make that number of stitches across (e.g. one double crochet stitch in the next 2 stitches).

The stitch count will go up by 20 stitches in each row.
Once you’ve reached the width needed, FASTEN OFF and SEW IN ENDS.
